The first Navy fleet of Navy warships partly powered by biofuels will launch today from San Diego, as part of the service’s long-running efforts to reduce its dependence on foreign oil and derive almost half its energy from alternative sources by 2020.

Carrier Strike Group 3 and its flagship, the nuclear-powered supercarrier USS John C. Stennis, will deploy to the Western Pacific area of operations. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack were expected to be on hand for the launch, according to Reuters.

Called the Great Green Fleet, the initiative was launched in 2009 by Mabus as part of an effort to boost its use of alternative fuels, improve the energy efficiency of its operations and reduce the amount of non-tactical petroleum use.

The program is named after President Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet, a convoy of destroyers that circled the globe at the beginning of the 20th century in a show of American naval strength.

“The ‘Great Green Fleet’ highlights how the Navy and Marine Corps are transforming our energy use to increase our combat capability, operational flexibility and resiliency so that we can go farther, stay longer and deliver more firepower,” Lt. Chika Onyekanne, a Navy spokesman, said in a statement.

In a video interview posted on the Navy’s Twitter account, Mabus said a shift towards greener fuels produced in the United States would only make the Navy more effective.

“It gives us a war fighting edge,” he said. “Energy can be used as a weapon. We need an American home grown source of alternative energy. We need one that is not subject to the wild price swings of conventional fuel, which are set in the world market. We need ones that can’t be used against us.”

Some Republicans have complained in recent years that the Navy should spend its limited resources on building new ships, instead of developing fuel alternatives.

Traditionally, the Galaxy devices have debuted at MWC in late February. MWC 2016 takes place between February 22 and 25 in Barcelona, but reports indicate the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge release date will come a month earlier, at a standalone event. Other reports claim that AT&T is already testing the S7 and S7 Edge, adding credibility to the accelerated launch rumor.

The Galaxy S7 Edge price is a hot topic right now, with plenty of people justifiably claiming next years flagship will cost even more than this years. For now, its impossible to say, but if Samsung has been feeling empowered by how well theGalaxy S6 Edge has sold, despite costing more than the standard S6, its possible the S7 Edge price might be marginally higher.

In late January, a pair of devices appearing to be S7 Edges passed through Indian customs. They bore legitimate IMEI numbers, came from South Korea and were listed as having 5.5-inch screens. This all but confirms the screen size for the S7 Edge, which has been subject to much umming and ahhing.

The latest information on the Galaxy S7 Edge specs states that Samsung will use two processors for its S7 line: an Exynos and a Snapdragon. This is how Samsung had previously managed the massive demand for its flagship devices, until last year when problems with the Snapdragon 810 forced Samsung to only use its own Exynos 7420 chipset in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The new Snapdragon 820 is reportedly meeting Samsungs requirements, however, so Qualcomm has been let in to share the workload once again. Considering the success of the Exynos 7420, its a little surprising that Samsung wouldnt just continue to produce all the chipsets itself, although the foundries producing the Snapdragon 820 are actually Samsungs.

Here are the leaked model numbers for both the Exynos 8890 Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge and the Snapdragon 820 versions:

A device bearing the model number SM-G935FD passed through Taiwans National Communications Commission certification body in late January. The most interesting nugget to come out of this process is that the device has dual SIM support. This had previously been rumored, but its nice to have it all but confirmed now.

Otherwise, the certification process confirms that the device has 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth and wireless charging, but none of that is worth choking on your cereal over.

We also know that Samsung is likely to use its new BRITECELL sensor technology in the Galaxy S7 Edge camera. Samsung presented the new sensor at an investor conference recently but did not confirm it will be the sensor in the S7 Edge.

Samsung did say that BRITECELL has a smaller, one-micron pixel size and is therefore not the larger 0.5-inch sensor thats rumored to also be in production. The smaller sensor size will mean a 20 MP BRITECELL sensor will reduce module height by 17 percent. Low light sensitivity at 1.0 µm should also ensure solid low light performance, supported by Samsungs WDR Technology and Phase-Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF).

In early January, a Reddit user posted a cursory look at the specs of a device we can only speculate to be the Galaxy S7 Edge+. The rundown provided the device with 4GB RAM and two pressure sensors. The user speculated that one could be the Force Touch sensor, while the other was made by BOSCH, but provided no information on what purpose it might serve.

The Galaxy A5 price is around US$399, or 425 euros in Europe (as of January 20), so it sits in quite an affordable price bracket. In terms of its features and size, the Galaxy A5 (2016) is comparable to the likes of the Honor 7 (around US$369) and the Nexus 5X (about US$379). Its a little more expensive than those devices, but not overly expensive by any stretch.

The 32 GB Samsung Galaxy S6, however, now costs only around US$450. Its still Samsung’s main flagship, and superior to Galaxy A5 (2016) in many areas, but only costs minimally more, and it is precisely this minimal difference that could have a negative impact on the sales of the Galaxy A5.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) design and build quality

The design of the two new A models is very similar. Both the Galaxy A5 (2016) and the A3 (2016) have the same quality appearance and stylish metal frame as the Galaxy S6. If just look at only the front and rear of the A5, you might think you actually had an S6 in your hand.

But look closely, and you’ll notice that the glass on the A5 has a rounded 2.5D edge design, which merges the glass and metal frame almost seamlessly.

This is not the Galaxy S6, but the Galaxy A5 (2016).

After several days of testing, the Galaxy A5 impressed me. The 155 g, 5.2-inch smartphone always felt secure in my hand and the metal frame hasnt started to show any scratches. The Galaxy A5 (2016) feels robust, with Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back.

The A5 has a glass and metal frame. 

The aluminum standby and volume buttons on the side feel nice to the touch and are easy to reach. Its definitely possible to use it one-handed.

In short, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) is easy to hold and use and just feels like a quality piece of hardware. The fact that the camera protrudes is a slight annoyance, but you could live with it. The Galaxy A5 (2016) is currently available in black, gold and white.

The Galaxy A5 (2016) comes with a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display, which offers a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution and rich, deep colors. Its contrast range is good too.

While the display’s richness benefits gaming, it also means that regular apps look impressive. Texts can also be read easily, thanks to the high contrast it offers.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) software

Samsung has finally started to heed the "less is more" motto. It has purified its software, and the A5 comes with significantly fewer pre-installed apps than some of its other devices. This is a good thing, and right from the start, youll find the apps that are there add real value to the software experience.

Included are the usual suspects Google, including Maps, YouTube and Google Drive, as well as a good selection of apps from Microsoft, including Excel, Word and Skype.

We were sent a German test model (SM-A510F) running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop (build LMY47X). Like the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016), TouchWiz is the software interface.

The A5 (2016) is not overrun with preloaded apps. 

The Touchwiz interface is unquestionably a matter of taste. It has some advantages over stock Android, and can be individually adapted.

Theres nothing in the way of special features. The Galaxy A5 (2016) does not offer anything that you wont find on another current smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) performance

The processor of the Galaxy A5 (2016) is an old acquaintance, as found in the Galaxy View tablet and Galaxy Tab S2. Its a 1.6 GHz clocked octa-core Exynos 7580, receiving support from 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded via microSD card. The Samsung Galaxy S6 famously does not have a microSD slot.

I performed a range of benchmark tests on the Galaxy A5 (2016), and it ended up mostly in the midfield. In the AnTuTu benchmark (v6.0.1) the Galaxy A5 (2016) scored 40,931, which is almost on par with the Nexus 5X and slightly behind the Honor 7 (around 45,000 points). It doesn’t stand out from the competition, and doesn’t come close to the current top smartphones.

But – and this is probably the deciding factor – no annoying delays or slowdowns were apparent when I was browsing and opening a succession of apps. Even graphically elaborate games ran smoothly across the screen.

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) has a mono speaker on the bottom. It plays music well (especially classical) but not brilliantly. The sound is better when listening with headphones.

The mono speaker is not one for sound fetishists. 

Also included is a headset that has a button for answer/end call, play/pause and a volume rocker. There’s a software equalizer for the music app that can be found in settings in the Audio options. Here you can improve the sound experience with headphones through the options SoundAlive and tube amplifiers.

These settings can be optimized for the headphone sound. 

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) camera

The camera of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) is nearly identical to that of the Galaxy A3. Thus, the main camera also has 13 MP in 4:9 format with a f/1.9 aperture. The front camera packs a 5 MP sensor with a f/1.9 aperture. In contrast to the A3, the A5 has an optical image stabilizer, which helps avoid blurry images.

If the light is poor, so are the pictures. 

In dark interiors, it’s hard to get good snapshots from the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016). Only in bright light will you get nice photos and selfies, so this isnt a suitable phone for photography enthusiasts.

At 2,900 mAh, the battery of the Galaxy A5 (2016) is 600 mAh larger than its predecessors. The battery can be fully juiced up in about an hour, thanks to the fast-charging feature.

Solid battery performance. 

The battery itself can run for quite some time, even under intensive use. In tests, I surfed the internet quite heavily and called up several apps, viewed more than an hour of video and played eight video games.

The integrated energy-saving mode also ensures that you can determine which apps are running in standby. This can save a significant amount of battery.

TECNO eventually comission CSR project to light up Computer Village with solar powered street lights

Yesterday, we reported that TECNO, a leading market maker of smartphones in Nigeria is set to fulfill its promised Corporate Social responsibility to illuminate the streets of computer village with solar powered street lights.

The project was eventually commissioned on January 21, 2016 at the computer village, Ikeja, Lagos.

The managing Director of TECNO Telecoms ltd., Mr. Chidi Okonkwo said TECNO the company will continuously invest community-centric projects ot enhance the standard of living of the people in the country.

“It is proven that private corporations with strong community focus in their business agenda tend to prosper better than the other. We’ll like to use this avenue to encourage other businesses and corporations in the area to show commitment to community development by spearheading projects that have lasting impact on the community,” he said.

Dubbed the “Light up Ikeja” project, TECNO donated eighty-eight (88) high end solar-powered street lights, fully installed by Arthur Energy Technology Ltd to its Ikeja host as a token of appreciation for years of peaceful co-existence.

The iFLUX engineered street lights have two years warranty cover and will be constantly maintained for optimum operation by Carlcare, a subsidiary of TRANSSION Holdings as is the TECNO Mobile and iFLUX brands.

“We’re elated as an agency to see what TECNO has done here today and we look forward to partnerships between private corporations like TECNO, who are community-centric and the government to bring life changing projects to the people,” says Mr. Olufemi Odubiyi, the Honourable Commissioner for Science and Technology.
